Dancing Nightly in the Tavern by Mark Anthony Jarman
introduction by John Metcalf
Back in print for the first time in a decade, Mark Anthony Jarman's debut collection brought a new sense of urgency to the Canadian short story and remains as compelling today.
A series of nine short stories that bring together characters from the out-of-work and lack-luck fringes of dancehalls and bars, Dancing Nightly in the Tavern offers glimpses into the quest for long-elusive fulfillment. Jarman infuses his characters with dark smoke — they are stained and imperfect, but fuelled by a desire to endure.
